The Story from the Summer Intern

Read the exciting story from our summer intern Mathilde Stadaas.

"I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone at Billington Process Technology for making this a truly rewarding and educational experience", states Mathilde.

This summer I’ve been lucky enough to spend six weeks as an intern at Billington Process Technology. During my time there, I worked on automating simulation processes in UniSim (steady state and dynamic process simulator), focusing specifically on dynamic simulation. My main task was to create a script or program that could streamline these processes, which gave me a chance to dive into both coding and learning more about process simulation. I landed my summer job through a contact of my father, who put me in touch with the company. After an interview, I was fortunate enough to secure the position.

One of the main challenges I faced during these six weeks was that I had no prior experience with UniSim, so I spent a significant amount of time learning the basic functions of the software. However, I found that my programming knowledge from my studies was extremely useful, especially in approaching new tasks and picking up skills along the way. It was a valuable exercise in learning how to learn quickly, which is essential in a fast-paced work environment.

The communication with the team was great. Even though it was the middle of the summer holidays, there was always someone available to answer my questions or provide guidance. I felt very welcomed by the entire team, and their support made a huge difference in my learning experience.

Working in a professional setting gave me new insights that differ from my academic experience. I found that while theoretical knowledge is important, the practical application of skills in a real-world context is invaluable. I also gained exposure to an industry and a company that I previously knew very little about, which made the experience even more exciting.

I would highly recommend this kind of summer job, especially for anyone interested in the field BPT works in. Even if you don’t have specific experience in process simulation, I’d highly recommend reaching out to Billington Process Technology if you’re eager to learn. I didn’t have much prior knowledge in this area either, but they were incredibly supportive, and it’s a great place to gain practical experience in the field and develop both personally and professionally.

Finally, I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone at Billington Process Technology for making this a truly rewarding and educational experience.

Thanks,
Mathilde Stadaas
