Fruitful collaboration between OKEA and BPT for the Brage field

Billington Process Technology (BPT) has since 2005 supported the operations of the Brage field. With OKEA taking over operatorship in 2022, BPT’s involvement has increased and OKEA is within the top-5 of BPT’s operating partners.

“We are very pleased with BPT’s pragmatic approach and just-do-it attitude, helping OKEA finding the best possible solutions in increasing the production and lifetime of our key assets”, express Kjetil Kiste, Asset Manager for Brage. “The BPT team play well in bridging the effort between our organization and the selected engineering house sharing their unique capabilities and vast experiences”.

The open and creative collaboration between OKEA and BPT is built on an agile approach that fits both organizations very well. The below outlines a few of the outcomes of the successful collaboration.

For the Bestla tie-back project, BPT has contributed to finding and validating cost effective solutions for OKEA, including:

  • Process safety solutions for the tie-back within the existing asset integrity limits
  • Alignment of fluid characteristics for the new tie-back

Process simulation expertise in general to establish a framework for future production increase:

  • New tie-backs
  • Evaluation of cooling medium system
  • Improved gas export system
  • Evaluation of Brage topside bottlenecks in Bestla-Brage joint production cases

BPTs has contributed to finding greener solutions with reduced CO2 emissions for OKEA:

  • Studies on possibilities for integration of offshore wind power to reduce emissions due to less usage of traditional gas turbines
  • Reduced flaring by re-cycle of produced water flash gas back into the process

To deliver value added input and advisory to OKEA project and operational departments, BPT utilizes the wide domain knowledge gained from decades of experience within process, flow assurance, process safety and operational disciplines paired with utilization of the industry-leading simulation tools and BPT established best-practice work processes.

The Brage Field

Brage is an offshore oil field located close to the Oseberg Area in the northern North Sea, 125 km west of Bergen, in water depths of 137 metres. The field is developed as a fixed integrated production, drilling and accommodation facility with a steel jacket. Oil is exported via the Oseberg Transport System (OTS) to the Sture terminal, while the gas is exported via pipeline to Kårstø. In November 2022, OKEA took over Wintershall Dea’s entire share (35.2%) in Brage as well as the operatorship.

Billington Process Technology (BPT) is an independent digital solution, simulation and service company with Headquarter outside Oslo, Norway. BPT has unique domain knowledge within production and process facilities. We are world-class users of process simulators, and among the specialties are compressor design as well as process safety. The BPT Digital Production Twin includes an unmatched solution for holistic sensor-correction providing invaluable data fundament for a number of advanced digital applications (ala machine learning) as well as calibrated steady-state and dynamic simulators for efficient production optimization. BPT is a frontrunner in modernizing field development approach together with innovating oil companies. A BPT specialty is to apply integrated multiphase flow and dynamic process simulators throughout the field development, commissioning, and life of field to validate and improve design as well as troubleshoot and perform production optimization.
